Steps to Manage Diabetes
Healthy Eating
- Focus on balanced meals with vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats.
- Limit sugary drinks and processed foods.
- Work with a registered dietitian or diabetes educator to create a personalized meal plan.
Physical Activity
- Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity most days of the week.
- Walking, swimming, biking, or dancing are great options.
- Exercise helps control blood sugar, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce stress.
Monitoring Your Blood Sugar
- Regular testing helps you understand how food, activity, and medications affect your levels.
- Keep track of readings to share with your healthcare provider.
- Use tools like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) if recommended.
Medications and Insulin
- Take medications exactly as prescribed by your provider.
- Ask questions if you notice side effects or challenges.
- Never stop medications without medical guidance.
Regular Checkups
- Schedule yearly eye exams, foot checks, and routine lab work.
- Work closely with your healthcare team to prevent or catch complications early.
Emotional & Social Support
Living with diabetes can feel overwhelming. Connecting with others makes it easier. Consider:

- Talking with a counselor or mental health provider.
- Family and friends who can encourage healthy habits.
