Prepare your Home for the Winter
Winterize your home
- Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows
- Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls and in crawl spaces
- Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks
Check your heating system(s)
- Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure it is clean, working properly, and ventilated to the outside
- Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys
- Have a safe alternate heating source and alternate fuels available
Smoke detectors
- Install or replace non-working smoke detectors:
- Each bedroom
- Outside each sleeping area such as a hallway
- On every level of the home including the basement
- In living rooms (or den/family room)
- Near stairways to upper levels
- At least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to avoid false alarms
